Regime Uncertainty

Regime uncertainty is the hesitation investors feel when they can't predict how the government will treat their property and returns in the future. The term was coined by economic historian Robert Higgs, who used it to explain why private investment stayed so weak during the Great Depression. Business owners weren't sure whether new rules, taxes, or seizures were coming, so they held back, and the recovery dragged on.

The idea applies to nations as well as individuals. On Episode 049 of Between The Lies, Luke Tatum points to sanctions as a reason foreign buyers may be cooling on US debt. The Bravos Research video the hosts discussed refers to an effort it calls "Operation Economic Outcast," aimed at cutting Iran and its allies out of the Western financial system. If the US can freeze a country out of the dollar system, any government holding Treasuries has to weigh that political risk before buying more, especially long-term bonds it will hold for decades.

Austrian economists emphasize that markets run on confidence in stable rules. When those rules can change at a politician's discretion, capital becomes cautious, prices start reflecting political risk, and long-term planning gets harder for everyone. Investors respond the only way they can, by demanding a higher return for the added risk or by taking their capital somewhere the rules are more predictable. For a country, that shows up as rising yields on its long-term debt.

Why It Matters

Regime uncertainty isn't just a problem for foreign central banks. Ordinary savers face it every time tax rules, retirement account limits, or monetary policy shift under them. The more your wealth depends on decisions you can't control, the more exposed you are. That's why the Between The Lies hosts emphasize holding capital in contractual, privately owned structures with a long track record through political change.
